Troop31logo

On the tenth of April in the year 1913, the first meeting of Boy ScoutTroop 31 was held in a small room at the Third Presbyterian Church on East Avenue. At that time, a man by the name of Capt. Frederick W. Hinrichs Jr. took on full responsibility to become the first "Scoutmaster of Troop 31".

Capt. Hinrichs believed in inspiring young men to climb to greater heights. With his guidance, the troop was formed and adhered to the principles of Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the modern Scouting movement.  Troop 31 has made the "Boy Led Troop" the cornerstone of the scouting experience. We promote the ideals of scouting by guiding young men to be self-confident future leaders and to aspire to the ultimate rank of Eagle.

As members of Troop 31, the boys manage and control all aspects of the troop operations - from planning a simple meal for a patrol to running a meeting to planning a campout.  Our adult advisors provide guidance to the Scout leadership so that they can accomplish the goals they have set for themselves and the Troop.  Though years of successful programs, Troop 31 has created an environment that challenges boys to learn what it takes to be self-sufficient, self-reliant, and self-motivated while simultaneously caring about and leading others.

After 98 years and 38 Scoutmasters, our parents and alumni are proud of the 149 Scouts who have earned their rank of Eagle as members of BSA Troop 31.  If you are interested in visiting or joining BSA Troop 31, we welcome you to visit a Troop meeting and experience it first-hand. I look forward to meeting with you; feel free to contact me at Scoutmaster@Troop31BSA.org to set up appointment to visit Troop 31

Yours in Scouting,
John H. Folwell
38th Scoutmaster, BSA Troop 31

BOY SCOUT TROOP 31 ROCHESTER, NY
WELCOMES NEW SCOUTS!

We welcomed FIVE new Scouts to the Troop 31 family on Friday, May 18 at Seton Catholic School:

Kyle H., Andrew R., Joseph B., Patrick T. & Elliot C.

Troop 31 scouts attended the Crossing of the "New Scouts" from Cub Scout Pack 65 to welcome these new scouts to the Troop 31 family.  Since 1910, it has been the mission of the Boy Scouts of America to prepare young men to make ethical choices over their lifetime by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.  We are very excited to have these scouts join our troop and hope they enjoy their experience with us and return for many future years. Troop 31 continues to grow and become a better and stronger troop with the addition of such fine young candidates and future leaders of not only Troop 31 but beyond Boy Scouts.  WELCOME SCOUTS!

Troop 31 Order of the Arrow Election

Troop 31 held its 2012 Order of the Arrow election on Monday, May 14. The Order of the Arrow is Scouting's National Honor Society. As an honor society, it is meant to recognize and honor those scouts in our troop that best demonstrate the ideals found in the Scout Promise and Law. It is the scouts' chance to reward fellow scouts for their commitment and dedication to scouting and our troop. Members are organized into local youth-led lodges that harbor fellowship, promote camping, and render service to Boy Scout councils and their communities.

The four stated purposes of the Order of the Arrow are: "(1) Recognize those who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives and through that recognition cause others to conduct themselves in a way that warrants similar recognition; (2) Promote camping, responsible outdoor adventure, and environmental stewardship as essential components of every Scout’s experience, in the unit, year-round, and in summer camp; (3) Develop leaders with the willingness, character, spirit and ability to advance the activities of their units, our Brotherhood, Scouting, and ultimately our nation; and (4) Crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others.

Both candidates Tyler B. and John F. were elected to this prestigious scouting program. Tyler and John will be participating in an Ordeal induction, intended to emphasize service and self-sacrifice, in July 2012. We extend our sincerest CONGRATULATIONS to them.

VISIONS OF SCOUTING

In 1910, the Boy Scouts of America was founded to help young people grow into responsible, well-rounded citizens. As a result, more than 100 million Americans have experienced the traditional, values-based program offered by the BSA. Below, a celebrated American shares their thoughts on the Scouting experience:

"The Boy Scouts of America has something going for it that all the government welfare programs in America can't match: SUCCESS.  Besides families and religion, Scouting is probably this country's single best program for building character in boys, and has been for nearly a century.
